Bilingual Education or Translation

The Bilingual Education/Translation CTE program emphasizes the need to provide students with a foundation for understanding and working with bilingual learners. Students will examine the nature of cross-cultural understanding and knowledge. During the program, students will have the option to engage in one of two tracks. In the first track will focus on increasing the pipeline of students going into the translation/interpreter field. Whereas, the second track will address the nations need to have more individuals in school/classroom settings who can respond to our ever growing diverse population.

Course Sequence:

Level I- Linguistics (1.0)

  • Students will become familiar with linguistic terminology through the teaching of methods an application of linguistic.
  • Students will discuss theories and research on how both first and other languages are learned by children and adults and the social implications of language use.

Level II- Cultural Identity (1.0)

  • This course emphasizes how learning and identity development occur in cultural contexts using a critical multicultural lens. Students will explore their own cultural identity and consider the ways that their language, culture, and experiences can serve as assets in their careers as bilingual professionals.
  • The course offers students the language to identify potential biases and the tools to push back against them.

Level III- Responsive Learning Communities (1.0) or Intro to Translations (1.0)

Level IV-Strategies for Teaching Language (.5) or Fundamental Practices in Translation & Interpretation (.5)
